In Hindi, घर is more than a building — it is the feeling of belonging. We make things for your home the way we'd want them in ours: slowly, with care, made to last.

The story

We started Ghar to bring intention home.

Two friends in Amsterdam, one shared love: bringing India's craft traditions into everyday slow living. We work directly with artisan communities in India — starting with hand block printing, with regional fabrics from across India on the way.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

What is hand block printing?

Hand block printing is a centuries-old Indian textile craft. A design is carved into a wooden block, the block is dipped in colour, and pressed onto fabric by hand — one impression at a time. A single pattern can use several blocks, one for every colour. Our cushion covers are hand block printed on 100% pure cotton by artisan communities in India.

Why do I see small misprints or ink variations in the pattern?

Because a human hand pressed every block. Small variations in pressure, ink, and placement are the nature of hand block printing — they are not defects, but proof that your piece was made by a person, not a machine. No two Ghar pieces are ever identical.

Why is the design not perfectly aligned everywhere?

Each impression is placed by eye and by hand, block after block, along metres of fabric. The gentle shifts in alignment are part of the rhythm of the craft — look closely at any hand block printed textile and you will find them. It is how you know it is real.

Are your products bought from a wholesale collection?

No — every Ghar piece is custom made for us. We spend hours designing each print, wooden blocks are carved for that design, each piece of fabric is printed block by block, then cut and sewn to our dimensions, checked for quality, shipped to us in the Netherlands, and sent on to you. That is also why there are limited pieces of everything.

What goes into the price of a Ghar piece?

Hours of skilled work by real people. Designing the print, carving each wooden block from solid wood — a single block can take up to a week — printing colour by colour by hand, stitching, finishing, and quality checks. Our artisans are fairly paid for their craft. You are not paying for a logo; you are paying the hands that made it.

How do I wash and care for my block printed cushion cover?

Air it out often — it needs washing less than you think. When needed: cold water, gentle cycle, washed alone. Dry in the shade, never tumble dry, never bleach, and iron on the reverse side. Cared for this way, hand block printed cotton stays beautiful for years. See our Care page for the full guide.

Where do you ship and how long does delivery take?

We currently deliver within the EU, from Amsterdam. All orders are pre-orders while we build our inventory, so delivery can take a few extra days — we email you your exact delivery timeline the moment your order ships.

Why is your stock so limited?

On purpose. We produce in small batches so nothing is overproduced and nothing ends up in a landfill. Each design exists in a limited number of pieces — when they are gone, the next batch is already being made, slowly and properly.

Do you offer block printing workshops?

Soon! We are planning workshops where you can carve, ink, and press your own prints — the whole joy of making fabric by hand. Subscribe below and you will be the first to hear the dates.
